New Illinois Law for First-time DUI offenses
Governor Rod Blagojevich signed a new law on August 24, 2007 which mandates all first-time drunk driving offenders to install breath test machines (alcohol ignition interlock devices) in their automobiles. Before offenders can start their vehicles they will have to pass the breath test. If an offender fails their breath test the device will prevent the car from starting.
Illinois is the 4th state to make a breath test mandatory. Other states which have this law are New Mexico, Arizona, and Louisiana.
The new law will be effective in 2009. It is expected to affect nearly 30,000 offenders. This device will be rented and will cost approximately $150 to install plus the monthly fees.
If offenders try to drive someone else’s car, they could face jail time.
