Stephen D. Phillips and Terrence Quinn of Phillips Law Offices in Chicago settled the case of a 44 year old man who died of Pulmonary Embolus who was misdiagnosed as Asthma by an Allergist.

Judge John Ward approved a $1,950,000 settlement Thursday October 19, 2007 in a case involving the death of a 44 year Carey Laska from Pulmonary Embolus. The case arose out of the first time office visit of Carey Laska to Dr. James Hunter, an allergist.

Mr. Laska had been experiencing shortness of breath for a few days prior to this visit and told Dr. Hunter that he had been treated for pulmonary embolus in the past. Despite this history of pulmonary embolus Dr. Hunter diagnosed Mr. Laska as suffering from Asthma and discharged him with a prescription for steroids and inhalers. Interestingly Mr. Laska had never been diagnosed with Asthma prior to this.

An interesting aspect of this case was that at the time of his death Mr. Laska was a stay at home dad for his 13 year old son while his wife worked outside of the home. The evidence showed Mr. Laska to be an attentive, caring, and capable provider in his home for his family.

The Laska’s were represented by Stephen Phillips and Terrence Quinn of Phillips Law Offices in Chicago. Dr. Hunter was represented by Paul Price of Chicago.
